Verizon Wireless and Adobe Systems have announced a strategic alliance to build a mobile ecosystem around Flash technology. As a result of this alliance, Verizon Wireless and Adobe will deliver Flash-based content and exceptional user experiences to Verizon Wireless subscribers.
What does this mean to the industry?
Verizon Wireless is expected to be the first North American operator to introduce Flash-enabled handsets to the market. Developers will be able to create and monetize rich content, applications and data services based on Flash technology, while subscribers will benefit from customized user interfaces and an exceptional mobile experiences.
What are the terms of the deal?

Why did Verizon choose Adobe's Macromedia Flash technology?
By launching Flash-enabled handsets, Verizon Wireless can reduce deployment costs, offer more consistent playback across diverse devices, and develop content and user interfaces three to five times faster than competing solutions. Flash is the leading technology for delivering rich user experiences, including enhanced content and browsing, customized user interfaces and data services. Flash is currently licensed by the world's largest operators and handset manufacturers, including NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Nokia and more. More than 1 million designers and developers utilize the industry-standard Flash authoring environment, which has been optimized for mobile.
Which handsets will support Flash on the Verizon Wireless network?
The specific handsets have not been announced.
When will Verizon be launching Flash-enabled handsets?
Verizon Wireless will be launching Flash-enabled handsets before the end of the year. More information will be made available to developers later this year.
What types of Flash applications and content do you expect on the Verizon network?
A broad range of applications and services are expected. Just as it is impossible to predict the width and breadth of great content developed on the web using Flash, we do expect similar variety of content using Flash within mobile handsets. Initial content and applications are likely to focus on traditional mobile services such as games, ring tones, etc.
Will Verizon Wireless' Flash-enabled handsets use Flash Lite or FlashCast?
We are not commenting on the services Verizon will launch around Flash technology, but our immediate goal is to enable Flash Lite on Verizon handsets, thereby providing enhanced user experiences such as enhanced WAP browsing, user interfaces, games, business applications and advanced phone-based portals.
How does this announcement impact Qualcomm? Is this a potential BREW replacement?
No. Verizon Wireless, Adobe and Qualcomm will closely collaborate on delivering mobile solutions to the market. Last fall, Adobe announced that the company will be delivering a Flash Lite extension for BREW. Expected to become available in the second half of 2006, the Flash Lite extension for BREW enables Flash content to run on BREW handsets. The extension leverages key aspects of the BREW platform, including over-the-air distribution and billing, and provides developers with an opportunity to bring their Flash Lite content to marke
