As you can see, the Sony CLIÉ is a multimedia powerhouse. With a device like this, Sony has taken advantage of an exciting new platform and included Macromedia Flash Player 5, version 1.0 on the ROM (permanent storage).

What does this mean? Anyone with a NX Series CLIÉ can run Macromedia Flash content. There's nothing to install, configure, purchase or download other than the content itself.

In a recent press release, Toshinori Nakamura, general manager of Sony Corporation's Handheld Computer division said "The Sony CLIÉ product line is about redefining the role of a handheld device. Sony selected Macromedia Flash as the vehicle for amplifying Sony's multimedia and content vision, given that Macromedia Flash is the standard in creating dynamic multimedia applications and services. The CLIÉ handheld includes an interactive CLIÉ Demo application created with Macromedia Flash that highlights the new features of the device. Sony looks forward to working closely with Macromedia and its more than 1.6 million creative Macromedia Flash designers and developers to revolutionize the handheld experience."

For CLIÉ owners, having Macromedia Flash Player built-in is very useful, and for content creators and developers, they can assume a common and consistent playback engine on their users' devices. But before we get into that, let's discuss Macromedia Flash Player. There's a good chance that most of you already have it installed on your desktop system (98 percent of all computers do).

Let's take a look at Macromedia Flash Player and what it allows you to see on the web, and beyond.
