The Evolution of Dreamweaver

Since its debut in 1997, Macromedia Dreamweaver has become the industry-standard solution for professional web development. Today, more than 3.2 million web professionals rely on Dreamweaver for web development.

With its core technology of Roundtrip HTML, which ensures code quality when switching between Code and Design views, Dreamweaver pioneered professional visual website development. In 2000, in response to the increased popularity of server technologies among web developers, Macromedia introduced Dreamweaver UltraDev. This product offered the functionality of Dreamweaver plus tools for creating web applications in ASP, JSP, and ColdFusion.

In May 2002, Macromedia released Dreamweaver MX to support the broadening roles of modern web professionals. Dreamweaver MX melded the best development features of UltraDev and key code editing features of HomeSite into the core Dreamweaver environment. It was the first step Macromedia took toward creating a single development environment for web professionals, one that would let them build a variety of sites and applications the way they wanted to—by hand coding, visual design, or a combination of the two. Dreamweaver MX was extraordinarily well received, earning more product awards than any other web development tool in history—including all prior versions of Dreamweaver.

With the release of Dreamweaver MX 2004 in September 2003, Dreamweaver took web design to the next level by adding revolutionary support for CSS-based design and development. By weaving CSS into the workflow of all users, Dreamweaver delivered standards-based web development into the hands of everyone, a pioneering step that contributed to the increased, widespread adoption of CSS by web professionals.

Dreamweaver 8 builds on the foundation of prior releases by expanding functionality in key areas, such as XML and CSS, and streamlining the workflow to help users accomplish more in less time. By supporting the latest professional design methodologies, Dreamweaver 8 unlocks the power of open, standards-based development for the web community while enhancing the basic tools that professionals need. Dreamweaver also supports all major server technologies, including ColdFusion, PHP, ASP, ASP.NET, and JSP for developers of all skill levels to bring designs to life.
