Flash Updater FAQ

Macromedia recently announced plans to offer an update release for Macromedia Flash MX 2004 and Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004. This FAQ describes some of the details of that announcement.

Is Macromedia planning to release an updater for Flash?
Yes, Macromedia has been working on an updater for Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX Professional 2004. This work has been done in conjunction with the localized releases of these products.
Why is Macromedia planning to release this updater?

The Flash community is incredibly dedicated and vocal. We have been watching our users produce content and listening to their requests and challenges. In this updater, we plan to provide fixes to many of the most common problems reported.

We have also heard from our customers that more help and guidance is needed to be truly successful with the new MX 2004 versions of Flash. To that end, we are also working on additional documentation and Developer Center articles, and tutorials to ease the migration to the Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 versions.

What is in the updater?
There are three major areas of improvement to the product in this updater:
  • Bug fixes for the most important bugs identified in the Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 release
  • Stability and performance improvements
  • Improved and extended Help documentation
When will the updater be available?
We expect the updater to be available in November 2003.
How will I get the Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 updater?
There are two ways you can get the updater:
  • If you already use Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 , the updater will be available on the Macromedia.com web site for download.
  • If you purchase Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 after the updater availability date, the updater will be included in the product install.
  • In both cases, the updater will be free-of-charge.

I plan to purchase the localized version of Flash MX 2004 or Flash MX Professional 2004. Will I require the updater?
It depends on which language version you plan to purchase or where and when you purchased. We will be rolling the Updater directly into the products, so please use the Help > About menu in Windows or Flash > About on Macintosh to verify that you have the latest release version which is 7.1.1.

French and German versions may need to be updated to bring those products from 7.1. to 7.1.1. All other localized versions of the MX 2004 Flash products will ship with the updates included in the install. No updater install will be required.
I am using the English version of Flash MX 2004 or Flash MX Professional 2004 on a double-byte operating system. Will I require the updater?
Yes. If you are using a double-byte operating system such as Korean, Chinese, or Japanese and want to run the English version of Flash on those operating systems, you should use the English product with the updater.
Should I wait for the updater to use Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 ?
No. The updater simply fixes bugs in Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004. It will not cause any rework to content created in Flash MX 2004 or Flash Professional MX 2004 and is not an intrusive install.
I am a Studio customer, is there a special updater available for me?
No, the same updater will work on the version of Flash that ships with Studio.
