MPSB05-06 Breeze 5.0 Password Reset Encryption
Originally posted: September 29, 2005
Summary
Macromedia Breeze 5.1 includes a security update which addresses an issue related to user password encryption in the database when resetting passwords in Macromedia Breeze 5.0.
NOTE: This update only applies to licensed customers of Breeze running the software on their own servers. This problem does not occur on the Breeze hosted system.
Solution
Macromedia Breeze customers should upgrade their licensed software to Macromedia Breeze 5.1, which includes the product fix to this issue.
Severity Rating
Macromedia categorizes this issue as a moderate issue and recommends users patch their installations.
Details
This 5.1 release contains the following patch:
- Using the “reset password” feature stores passwords in plain text in the database.
When users reset their passwords using the “reset password” link available off of the server login page, the resulting password is stored in the Breeze database in plain text instead of the intended hashed password.
Making the Changes
NOTE: Back up your existing files before making changes. As always, test the changes in a non-production environment before applying the changes to production servers.
Macromedia Breeze 5.0
- Download the Breeze 5.1 Updater
- Upgrade to Macromedia Breeze 5.1 following the installation procedures defined within the installation and configuration guide.
- After upgrading to Macromedia Breeze 5.1, the administrator should issue a password reset for users who may have been affected by this issue.
Macromedia Breeze 4.1 or lower
- You must first upgrade to Macromedia Breeze 5.0 in order to apply the Macromedia Breeze 5.1 updater to your deployment.
- Note: All user passwords are stored in plain text in versions 4.1 or earlier.
