In this tutorial, you create the Service Manager status widget for the Trio Motors Company using the UI Components that come with Macromedia Flash MX 2004. The status widget uses the Macromedia Flash Remoting application gateway and ColdFusion components to interact with a database that provides work order data to the login widget. This tutorial focuses on the coding and server interaction of the application and assumes that you have already created background graphics.

Flash Remoting also uses components for many of its functions. Macromedia has recently updated these components to work with the new ActionScript 2.0 coding standards. You can download these new components from the Requirements section below.

Note that this version of the tutorial applies to Macromedia Flash MX 2004. If you are using Macromedia Flash MX, check out the previous version of this tutorial, which was tailored to Flash MX users.

This tutorial covers the following topics:

  • Building the interface using UI components in Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004 (View).
  • Using ColdFusion components for the data access tier (Model).
  • Using the Macromedia Flash Remoting MX 2004 ActionScript 2.0 classes (Controller).
  • Creating a new instance of the newly created class by adding the code the FLA file.
