Macromedia Flash Player 6 Update
3/03/03
Welcome to Macromedia® Flash™ Player 6, the standard rich client for internet
content and applications. The Macromedia Flash Player ensures all Flash (SWF)
content is viewable and accessible consistently and across the broadest range
of platforms, browsers, and devices. Flash Player continues to be distributed
with every major partner, including Microsoft®, Apple, Netscape®, and
AOL, to bring rich content and applications immediately to over 455 million
people worldwide.
The Flash Player 6 Update installer will automatically
do the following:
- Update the contents of your Flash MX\Players folder
with the new version of Flash Player 6
- Update your Flash MX test movie player
- Install the updated Flash Player 6 ActiveX Control
and/or plugin, debug version only, into your browser(s).
To install using the Flash Player 6 Update installer (Windows
and Macintosh):
- Make sure Flash MX is not running.
- Close any open browser windows.
- In your Flash MX\Players folder, rename your existing
player files to *.old so you can restore them, if necessary,
after running this installer.
- Execute the file FlashPlayerUpdater.exe (Windows) or
FlashPlayerUpdater.hqx (Macintosh) to begin the installation.
- The files in your Flash MX\Players folder and subfolders
should now be updated.
- Open a browser window. Your ActiveX control, and/or
your plugin, should be installed and working. To verify
on Netscape, choose Help > About Plug-ins from the
browser's menu.

For more information on what's new in this version of
Macromedia Flash Player 6, please see the Flash
Player 6 Release notes.
What is the Debug player?
Macromedia Flash MX includes an integrated debugger. To use this feature, you
need to use debug-enabled (debug) versions of the Macromedia Flash Player.
The debug versions of the Flash Player are identical to the non-debug-enabled
(release) versions, except that the debug versions contain additional code
to communicate with Flash MX. By default, the debug versions are installed
into your browser(s) by this installer.
What is the Standalone player?
The standalone player plays Flash movies exactly as they appear in a Web browser
or an ActiveX host application, but without a browser. When you double-click
a Flash movie, the operating system starts the standalone Flash Player, which
in turn runs the movie. You can use the standalone player to make movies
(projectors) viewable for users who aren't using a Web browser or an ActiveX
host application.
What is the External (Test Movie) player?
The external (test movie) player plays Flash movies within the context of Flash
MX. This is the player that is run when you select Control > Test Movie
in Flash MX.
For more information on how to use the installers in your
\Players folder, and how to install and remove the updated
players, consult the file \Players\Readme.htm within your
Macromedia Flash MX installation directory.
